TRURO - Colchester County residents should not be concerned about Halifax's problem getting federal funds for a rink project, says the local Conservative candidate for the next federal election.
The provincial and municipal governments have all committed to central Nova Scotia's civic centre project but the federal government has made no official funding announcement towards the project.
Halifax Regional Municipality received word this week the federal government will not fund a $40-million four-pad arena in Hammonds Plains. One councillor even suggested politics might be in play with Nova Scotia electing an NDP government, including an NDP MLA for the Hammonds Plains area.
Interestingly, Truro-Bible Hill also elected an NDP MLA (Lenore Zann) during the past provincial election but Scott Armstrong, who will run for the Conservatives in the next federal election/byelection, said that is not an issue and Halifax's project is different from the Truro area project.
"That has no affect on our project," he said. "That funding was totally different ... We should be hearing something in the next several weeks."
ACOA Minister Peter MacKay came to Truro during the provincial election campaign and said he would be back before the fall with a cheque for the project.
Others might suggest the federal government is waiting to announce the funds after a byelection of general election is called.
"The timing of the byelection, that's not going to impact the timing of that announcement," Armstrong said.

Is there or not a provincial share of this expenditure ,do you have their check in hand let alone the feds?
Great work Jon,now work with the NDP government that you begrudge mention of in the article,or you may get sqat, building a great case for cooperation, which if you don't get you'll scream PARTISAN.
Wonderful set up the FEDS did it right or the NDP screwed the works.Theyl'll never get any credit for anything as you schedenfreud filled blues turn blue in the face waiting for the bad dream to go away.get your head out of the sand ,give credit where credit is due, next time you're hat in hand to the province, things may not come up all roses. -

While I think our chances of getting the funding here are fairly good, I wouldn't rate them any higher than that.
And Mr. Stanfield, please don't insult our intelligence by suggesting that which party is in control in this province doesn't have any bearing on grants from the federal level. We are, after all, talking about a PM that has shown his true colours more than once.
We're really not that dumb, and you don't have to put on your holier than thou, I know better attitude to make a point. -

Even if Halifax did need a 4 sheet ice surface more than it needs a working sewage treatment system(the concept of floatables---appalling) the project appears to not have had a suitable environmental impact study completed. That's the word so far from the government.
The groundwork was not done by HRM's council and now they claim foul.
The harbour is foul.
So is Uteck's twisting of fact. -

I hope Mr. Armstrong is right. I hear a lot of rumblings that this will not happen.
We need this facility in our area. -

Once again, disappointed with the assertation by the TDN with this article. A little bit of sensationalism with the report and the reference to newly elected NDP government has no merit. In reality, The Federal government make these funding decisions independently based on need, the fact that funding has been secured from the other levels of government, and the organization of our project. I think to infer that our area will not receive the Federal funding is without justification and without research. Mr. MacKay personally came to Truro at the request of those who are working very hard to secure this money. This project is vital to our area, and the Federal government will support our community changing Project.

The funding has been basically already announced by Mr MacKay! The only reason for holding off on the official announcement is to allow a weak Tory candidate in the next election to enjoy some of the spotlight! We will never forget the treatment of Mr Casey and the disdain for Atlantic Canada by Mr Harper!
