TRURO - Members of the Central Nova Volkssport Club are making progress on a new walking trail in Colchester County.
The informal group walks along area trails year-long and club members are currently working on extending part of the Cape-to-Cape Trail, which, when completed, will extend from Cape George in Antigonish to Cape Chignecto Provincial Park in Cumberland County.
The local 6.2 km portion of the trail members are working on is called Rogart Trail and will form a loop in Earltown to and from Sugar Moon Farm.
"We are digging a trail, cutting trees and generally preparing a walking path," said Sheila Wilson, club trail master. "We'd like to have it done by the end of summer."
A public walk in the Earltown area is scheduled for July 18 at 10 a.m.
"It keeps you regimented when you walk with a group and there's a social and fitness aspect to it," said Wilson, adding there are about 45 members in the club, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary in the region next year.
Walks vary in distance and difficulty. Some of the popular walks are through Victoria Park, a lighthouse walk in Bass River, and collectors walks, to name a few.
