I am a mother of an eight-year old and a four-year old children.
My eight-year old is in the French Immersion program at Douglas Street School. It is an incredible program. He learns the exact same things that the English speaking classes do, but he learns it in French and our family doesn't speak any French.
My four-year old will be starting school in September, and (big surprise) I want her in immersion as well. The class size is limited to 28 children. There are now 47 applications. The is a simple simple solution: have two classes of French immersion. At least, this is the hope of the parents wanting their children in the program.
This is one of those times where the school board can show that it is going to make the futures of our children a top priority.
If there is no room at Douglas Street School, move the program to a different school. Find the teacher, find the room, and get all 47 kids on the path to two languages.
