There are some special people in Colchester County and East Hants.
Some of them were in attendance this week for a heart-warming Big Brothers-Big Sisters (BBBS) of Colchester awards ceremony in Bible Hill.
The BBBs of Colchester has been helping vulnerable children beat the odds for more than 30 years and last year alone its many mentoring programs served 169 youth, ranging from elementary school kids to older teenagers.
It has been often said that it takes a community to raise a child and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters among us are shining examples, usually finding time to see their 'Littles' once a week for a few hours, doing things they both enjoy. Activities don't have to be spectacular. Many of the volunteers might take their Little to their home where they might play games, cook/have a meal, watch a movie or just hang out.
It's fun for both and very beneficial for the Little. That much was clearly evident on Tuesday as Bigs and Littles, some of whom have been matched together for nearly 10 years, clearly enjoyed each other's company.
Unfortunately, there is always the need for more 'Bigs' and in this area there are 70 children waiting for volunteers. Most of those are boys. The average age would be about 12.
What does the future hold for them? That's difficult to say but what is known for certain is their odds of succeeding in school, behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugs and alcohol and breaking other negative cycles improve when a Big Brother or Big Sister enters their life.
Something to think about for anyone looking to make a positive difference in someone's life. For more information, check out

On another note, a tip of the hat to the Truro rink of Colleen Pinkney (skip), Wendy Currie (mate), Karen Hennigar (second), Susan Creelman (lead) and Judy Burgess (coach), winners of the senior women's world curling championship last weekend in Russia.
This fantastic five has given Colchester County just one more thing to be proud of and our community would be hard-pressed to find more wonderful ambassadors to the world.
Well done, ladies.
