'O Canada ...'

With a budget that is more about cutting than spending, a plan to review the lyrics of O Canada may be more about deflecting attention from tough news than it is about doing something to make our anthem more inclusive of both genders.Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean caught most Canadians by surprise on Wednesday when she said in the speech from the throne that government wants to review the lyrics of the anthem with the aim of making them more gender-neutral.

While women's groups have been asking government for years to do just that, the response has almost been one of indifference or of political correctness that's gone too far. At the same time, there are those who believe the changes won't go far enough and along with removing references to 'thy sons command,' they want the phrase 'God keep our land' altered so not to offend those from other religions.

There's nothing wrong with taking a look at the anthem. It has been changed before and it may be time for it to change again.

You have to admit it was rather ironic for our female gold medalists to stand on the podium and sing an anthem that really doesn't recognize them as equal members of society.

We must not forget that Canadian women have served and died on foreign battlefields, have risen to the summit of the business world and are on a level playing field when it comes to science and politics as well.

And while equality is a cherished part of our constitution, the fact the same can't be said of the anthem should be troubling to a nation that prides itself on being accepting and tolerant of all races, religions and the two sexes.

Reviewing the anthem is one way of expressing ourselves as a modern nation.

Let's just hope it's not a case of someone trying to be politically correct or a government trying to deflect criticism. If that is the case, Canadians should hold the government's feet to the fire the next time we go to the polls either later this year or sometime in 2010.

The most intelligent and honest comment came from a 6 year old girl who asked her teacher after hearing O Canada--why is it always about the bots? This speaks volumes and says it all...this change needs to happen and is long overdue .

Is this a joke? It's a little bit early for April Fool's isn't it? Being female, I personally don't feel excluded by the line "thy sons command" and for women's groups to be screaming over something so trivial, they obviously have too much time on their hands! As for "God keep our land", in these days and times, can we really afford NOT to ask for any help at all? Canada was founded as a Christian country and for those who choose not to believe, practice other worships, or immigrate to this country, take it for what it is. If it were go great in their homelands, would they have come in the first place? People have no right to demand changes like this! Canada is a wonderful country where we have the freedom to complain and voice our opinions but it's time we stopped worrying about what everyone else thought or about who we might offend! This is our culture and our heritage and we have every reason to be proud of what we have and no reason to tiptoe around others about it!

What is wrong with our national anthem as it is? We don't always have to be so gender neutral to make women feel appreciated. I am a woman myself so I don't want to be seen as a woman-basher. Also to take "God" out of the anthem is wrong. People move to our country because they must think we can offer them a better life than their home country can so why shouldn't they accept our ways when they come here? If things are better in their home countries I don't think they would leave so please accept our ways when coming to our country.

The National Athem is part of who we are, I for one as a women do not find one thing wrong with it. If you come to a nation and don't like their athem then don't sing it, let the rest of us enjoy our heritage. I have family members both men and women who fight in the Canadian Army and have never thought the anthem made less of the women. Our nation is a Christian nation, from sea to shinning sea. It is time for the silent majority to speak up and let their voice be herd. God keep our land! AMEN!

Change the National Anthem? Are there not more critical items that we should be concerned with, such as education, health care, the deficit, to name just a few. Leave the National Anthem alone - it does not need to be changed. The National Anthem does not need to be gender neutral - it is universal for all Canadians and while there are many cultures in Canada, most of those who immigrated into this country - they did so of their own accord - they adopted this country and thus its National Anthem. Why are women and the multi-cultural community so threatened when things are not gender neutral or have God in them. Are we (women) so insecure; if that is the case, I feel sorry for you. Please don't mess with our National Anthem. I have family members that died fighting for Canada and part of Canada is its National Anthem. Leave it alone.
