While women's groups have been asking government for years to do just that, the response has almost been one of indifference or of political correctness that's gone too far. At the same time, there are those who believe the changes won't go far enough and along with removing references to 'thy sons command,' they want the phrase 'God keep our land' altered so not to offend those from other religions.
There's nothing wrong with taking a look at the anthem. It has been changed before and it may be time for it to change again.
You have to admit it was rather ironic for our female gold medalists to stand on the podium and sing an anthem that really doesn't recognize them as equal members of society.
We must not forget that Canadian women have served and died on foreign battlefields, have risen to the summit of the business world and are on a level playing field when it comes to science and politics as well.
And while equality is a cherished part of our constitution, the fact the same can't be said of the anthem should be troubling to a nation that prides itself on being accepting and tolerant of all races, religions and the two sexes.
Reviewing the anthem is one way of expressing ourselves as a modern nation.
Let's just hope it's not a case of someone trying to be politically correct or a government trying to deflect criticism. If that is the case, Canadians should hold the government's feet to the fire the next time we go to the polls either later this year or sometime in 2010.
