TRURO - History was made at Colchester County Council last week when the councillors traded in their paper agendas for new laptops.
"This is an historical evening at council, with laptops," said deputy mayor and meeting chairman Ron Cavanaugh. "It's the new era and hopefully everybody will get to enjoy them." The cost of the new equipment, including laptops, cases, warranties and accessories came in at approximately $32,000. Council had set a budget of $42,000 for the equipment.
Those who attend council meetings will note another change brought about by the introduction of the laptops - the location of the media table has been moved to the public seating area. The table was moved after concern was raised that members of the media might be able to read sensitive, in-camera material from the councillor's screens. (Which begs the question - why would councillors be reading in-camera material during the public session anyhow?).
