KENTVILLE, N.S. Health officials in southwestern Nova Scotia are seeking to recoup over $400,000 from a former employee accused of stealing it.
The Annapolis Valley, South Shore and South West Nova district health authorities have filed a joint lawsuit against Cary Lee Hollett and his wife, Michelle Hollett.
The civil action, filed in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Halifax last month, seeks payment of $408,076 that allegedly went missing while Cary Lee Hollett was working as a financial officer for the three health authorities.
"We need to do our due diligence to recover our losses," Tamara Gilley, spokeswoman with the Annapolis Valley District Health Authority, said Monday in an interview.
"We have a responsibility to protect public funds. I am really unable to release any other details because the matter is before the courts."
Hollett, 42, of Belmont, N.S., was an accounts payable clerk, working since October 2004 in the financial offices of the Annapolis Valley authority in Kentville. The office serves all three health districts and employs about 45 people.
Last November, he was fired from his job after a police investigation and an internal audit showed accounting irregularities and that over $400,000 was missing.
He was arrested after Kentville police and officers from the provincial Justice Department's proceeds-of-crime unit executed a search warrant at his home. He is charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000 and is scheduled to return to Kentville provincial court on March 8.
The allegations in the criminal case or civil lawsuit have not been proven in court.
Hollett has not yet filed a defence in the civil case.
