TRURO – David and Janet Tam are adding their own flair to a popular Truro restaurant, while maintaining its original integrity.

The Truro residents took over ownership of Fletcher’s restaurant on Prince Street in February. They have been getting to know customers before making any substantial changes, but now it’s time to add their special touch to it, they said.

“We didn’t want to come in and make changes first and fast. This (restaurant) has always worked so we don’t want to change too much,” David, who has more than 30 years in the food service industry and whose family owned and operated the King Lam in Bible Hill for 45 years, told the Truro Daily News.

Renovations began this week and include fresh paint, new flooring and “gutting” the washrooms.

“It needs an update; it needs some TLC,” said David.

“I like the old, vintage feel. It has a comfortable dining room and we want it to be retro and to match the dining room with the diner,” added Janet.

In addition, the Tams are creating a memory wall and are looking for old vintage photographs of the restaurant through its history, both inside and out.

“Fletcher’s has been around for about 50 years or so and we have already had a customer bring in some great photos from the late 1960s and early 1970s,” added David in a news release.

“We have already started adding a few of our own touches including hanging a signed Truro Bearcat jersey in the diner,” said David, adding the business will support the Truro Minor Hockey Association as well.

“The community has supported Fletcher’s for about 50 years so we want to show our support” to the community, said David.

A few things will remain the same, added the Tams. Fifteen staff members, many who have more than 30 years of service there, remain employed at the restaurant and it will continue with its menu and affordable prices, said David.

The Tams estimate another week of renovations are required before re-opening the doors to the public.
