MONTAGUE — In a tale of strange bedfellows, a pregnant dog abandoned in a filthy apartment here has been rescued by an animal control officer and the P.E.I. Humane Society.

The older golden lab was rescued from an apartment on Campbellton Street earlier this month after the occupant was successfully evicted.

The property manager had been unable to get into the apartment due to the aggressive nature of the dog.

The event was contained in the monthly report submitted to town council by animal control officer Mike Brothers.

“While waiting for (the property manager) I entered the house,’’ wrote Brothers about the Aug. 3 incident. “The dog was barking and growling and seemed aggressive, but after letting her smell the palm of my hand, she immediately became friendly.”

The dog was known to the neighbourhood and police because complaints of noise and barking had been filed. It appeared the occupant was rarely at home and the apartment was described as being left in a filthy state.

Brothers said he was able to remove the dog from the property on a leash and walked her up and down the street. A neighbour offered the dog some water and the animal rolled in the grass.

P.E.I. Humane Society’s Kim MacMillan seized the dog under the Companion Animal Protection Act and it was discovered the dog was lactating. No pups were found in the apartment and officials determined a litter was forthcoming.

“After doing some interviews, it seemed that the unusual litter will probably be a mix of golden lab and shih-tzu,’’ wrote Brothers. “I didn’t even know that was possible.”

The apartment owner is slated to join the list of being banned from adopting an animal from the shelter ever again.

I think this losers name should be published so the public can be aware that this person is an animal abuser, in case the idiot decides to get an animal from somebody other than the humane society.
