TRURO – A community-based dance party this week is joining forces with the United Way to benefit community organizations.

More than a dozen certified Zumba instructors from across the province are joining forces to support the United Way of Colchester’s Women United Day of Caring fundraising initiative.

Hosted by local Zumba instructor Crystal Mills, Zumba, a dance-fitness class incorporating Latin and international music, will be offered for up to three hours, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Nova Scotia Community College gym on Arthur Street, for a minimum donation of $10.

Terry Hearn, interim executive director at the United Way, told the Truro Daily News the money raised goes toward community impact grants for organizations with fixed assets. Examples of past grants are furniture that was given to the hospice society, help with roof repairs/replacement for Big Brothers Big Sisters and a fridge for the Colchester Food Bank.

In addition to the Zumba party, there will be a silent auction, chair massages and a ticket raffle.

“This is a great way for people of all fitness levels to try Zumba and for Zumba enthusiasts to learn new dance moves,” said Mills in a news release.
