STEWIACKE – Some “old-fashioned” fun will return to Stewiacke this week.
For more than 40 years, Stewiacke has offered Town Days, and this year’s event will be held Thursday to Sunday. Mayor Wendy Robinson, who has been busy helping with the initiative, said some of the highlights of this year’s gathering include fireworks and the community parade.
“It takes 45 minutes to watch the parade,” Robinson said, adding it’s unknown how many entrants there will be because people can get involved right up to the day of the parade, which is Saturday.
Other unique aspects to this year’s Town Days include upgraded games of chance and a rock n roll theme.
“We wanted rock n roll because it covers a lot of eras and includes many generations,” said Robinson.
Other events sure to draw a crowd, said Robinson, include an antique display in Dennis Park, a variety concert and a dance on Friday and Saturday, to name only a few.
Robinson estimates about a 100 volunteers are invested in Town Days and others who want to share their talents are encouraged to call the town hall at 639-2231. She said it’s that sense of community and togetherness that makes these types of events a success.
“It’s a bit of old-fashioned fun and a rural town getting together. Usually our world is more fast paced and about glitter and shiny attractions. But this is an opportunity to connect,” said Robinson.
“Coming together also makes people feel important and that’s invaluable. And maybe it may (encourage) people to want to come live in the community.”
Last year’s Town Days attracted hundreds of people.
