Both trucks carrying large concrete girders

GREAT VILLAGE – Two separate tractor-trailer crashes Tuesday afternoon on Highway 2 between Great Village and Lower Five Islands blocked traffic for several hours.

Cpl. Addie Maccallum, with the Colchester District RCMP, said the driver of one of the trucks was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

RCMP from Colchester and Cumberland detachments responded to the scenes of two separate crashes at about 3 p.m. One was in the 7300 civic block, west of Great Village and the other was near Lynn Road, Lower Five Islands.

“Right now Transportation Infrastructure Renewal and Hazmat are both on scene because there was a small diesel leak from one of the trucks,” Maccallum said at about 4:20 p.m.

The trucks were carrying concrete bridge structures measuring 126 feet long, weighing 62 tonnes and were destined for Five Islands. The girders were being hauled on a trailer with the support of a dolly because of their length.

There was no collision with any other vehicles.

“One lane is open now,” said the corporal. “But motorists should expect closures as they extricate the vehicles and the loads.”

Maccallum said a large piece of equipment, such as a crane, would be needed to remove the wreckage, which was expected to take place Tuesday evening.
