UPDATED 3:35 p.m. -TRURO - Truro police have arrested and charged a 29-year-old man in relation to the vicious attack and  death of a cat that occurred on Saturday.

The Truro-based male is charged in relation to an incident that occurred at about 3:20 a.m. on Saturday in which police were called to the Fairview Drive area after a resident reported witnessing an act of cruelty.

It was reported on the weekend that a man in a car coaxed a grey and white cat off a neighbourhood doorstep. When the cat went to the man, he grabbed it by the hind legs, lifted it over his head and swung it down into the ground.

Police are urging people to be extra cautious about pet safety after a cat was viciously attacked and killed early Saturday morning.

At about 3:20 a.m., police were called to the Fairview Drive area after a resident witnessed an act of cruelty.

"A woman said that when she got home a grey and white cat was on her step and she gave it some food," said Truro Police Service Sgt. Stephen van Herk. "She later heard a car pull into the driveway and a man calling the cat toward him."

When the cat went to the man, he grabbed it by the hind legs, lifted it over his head and swung it down into the ground.

The man is described as being caucasian, 20 to 30 years old, and wearing a grey T-shirt and possibly a white cap. He was driving a newer model Mazda, which was dark blue or black.

The woman who witnessed the attack told police the man appeared to be trying to call another cat when he drove down the road.

People are asked to contact police if they have any information that would help identify the man involved.

This is such a disturbing story. I am concerned this person is still around this community promising to appear in court in August. Is that a joke? What kind of human being can do such a thing to something so innocent?? I really do not know what has happened to our young society? Video games? Cell phones? No responsibilities of any kind? I am generalizing but please get more productive in helping this community become a cleaner, better place to live in. I, for one, am not proud to say I live in this community. Crime seems to be rising as I am writing this!

Only a demented individual would do something like that to a helpless animal. I hope they find him and lock him up. Anyone who would do that to an animal would do the same to a human. Disgusting!!

this obviously ill individual needs more than a slap on the wrist form the justice system. he was not "just a cat" he was a sweet loving trusting little animal who was rescued from the SCPA under the Angle Pet program by a loving mother who wanted her children to experience the unconditional love of a pet, he was more than a pet to them; best friend and confidant to Mom, and her kids loved and trusted everyone and this cruel human has broken the hearts of a lot of people who cared deeply for this loving innocent animal....please give to the SPCA and the Angle Pet program, don't let his life mean nothing
