Truro to celebrate Parks Day with activities for all ages

Although Saturday, July 19 is the official date for the national celebration of parks, Truro’s activities will span three days.

The weekend begins Friday with a free mid-summer movie night presentation of The Lego Movie at 9 p.m. at the J. Arch Fraser Bandshell. Participants should bring a chair and snacks.

Saturday’s highlights include the VP Challenge, which includes 5K and 7.5K races with natural and man-made obstacles beginning at 9 a.m. There is also a race for children. To register and for information log onto www.vpchallenge.ca.

Also Saturday, there will be two hours of live entertainment by Tim Bowers, bouncy houses, facepainting and more from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

New this year, according to the parks, recreation and culture department, is a guided walk of the park beginning at 1 p.m. Space is limited. Participants should sign up at the bandshell between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“We’re very excited about this new public tour,” says Cathy von Kintzel, special events and culture co-ordinator for Truro Parks, Recreation and Culture. “In addition to introducing people to what the park has to offer today, it also explores and explains some of the whimsical and interesting names that have been given to much-loved areas of the park over the generations.”

Some of those names include the Fairy Dell, Irresistible Engagement Seat, Cathedral Dell, Holy Well, the Devil’s Pulpit, the Witch’s Cauldron and Nymph’s Grotto.

There will also be a toonie swim in the Victoria Park outdoor pool from 6 to 8 p.m.

Another physical activity taking place will be hosted by the Truro Tennis Club, which will offer the Subway Super Slam, July 18 to 20, featuring top players from throughout the Maritimes.

For Sunday, a live concert will be featured as part of the Sunday in the Park summer concert series. Witchitaw will be on stage from 2 to 4 p.m.
