Former Halifax Mooseheads blueliner Steve Lund.
Fortunately, thereâs no helmet required for his starring role as werewolf Nick Sorrentino on Bitten, which airs on Canadian specialty channel Space and American cable station Syfy.
Lundâs promising hockey career came to a halt six years ago due to a serious concussion. The feisty blueliner had been selected fifth overall in the 2005 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Draft.
âWe were in the doctorâs office, and they did an MRI of my spinal cord, and there was some inflammation there,â the now 25-year-old Lund recalled of that life-changing moment.
âThey were like, âif you get hit the wrong way, you could be a quadriplegic, and that was that,â Lund added Tuesday, while sipping a coffee and taking in the sun on the Halifax waterfront, during a trip home from Toronto to visit family and friends.
What became very clear for Lund is there was another path to success, and for him that meant pursuing his life-long passion for acting.
âI was always telling people I was going to be an actor, when I was four, five, six,â he said, citing Indiana Jones as his childhood idol. âAnd then I started playing hockey very often, and I grew very fast, and hockey took over.â
His health shut down his goal of going pro, but opened up the chance âto do what I actually want to do.â
âI still have a long way to go, but itâs been incredibly exciting,â Lund said of his new dream. âI didnât know I could feel this comfortable doing something.â
Lund will soon be on set for a Christmas movie to air on The Hallmark Channel, in addition to rejoining the cast of Bitten to shoot a second season this fall.
He credits hockey for helping teach him âwhat it took to succeed,â and still plays pick-up when he can, keeping him in werewolf shape.
âThat team mentality has been present in every one of my jobs, most notably now with this show Bitten,â he said. âTo ⊠work collectively as a unit, really makes a huge difference on camera.â
Whether playing in the big league or on the big screen, Lund âs advice is to âtake care of your headâ and âgive it your all.â
âDoing what you love is the key to ultimate happiness,â he said.
Lund played for the Mooseheads and also the Prince Edward Island Rocket during his QMJHL career between 2005-08.
