TRURO – A local Mi’kmaq artist and a recording commemorating Elizabeth Bishop have been named finalists for the 2014 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award.

Mi’kmaq artist Alan Syliboy, of Millbrook.

‘I am in need of music,’ the Elizabeth Bishop Centenary legacy recording, and The Thundermaker, a multi-media installation by Millbrook’s Alan Syliboy, are going head-to-head for the prize, along with Harmonic Motion, a sculpture/installation by Toshiko H. MacAdam and Charles MacAdam;  Responsio, music by Peter-Anthony Togni; and Refuge, a play by Mary Vingoe.

Each of the five shortlisted works will receive $3,000 at a reception at Government House, while the winner will be announced at the Creative Nova Scotia Gala in October. The winner will receive an additional $22,000.

The public will have a chance to hear the creators of the shortlisted works talk about their respective works at an event scheduled for September.

The legacy recording features soprano Suzie LeBlanc, and composers Emily Doolittle, Christos Hatzis, Alasdair MacLean and John Plant. It is a program that commemorates the connection between Great Village and the distinguished American poet, Elizabeth Bishop. The composers have set Bishop’s poems, which LeBlanc sings with The Elizabeth Bishop Players and Blue Engine String Quartet.

Syliboy’s The Thundermaker is built around the recently discovered and translated Mi’kmaq legend, The Stone Canoe, in which the Thundermaker story is embedded. The installation features a circle of text panels illustrated with Syliboy’s drawings, and culminates with a teepee containing a projected animated film of the story.
