HALIFAX - The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) released a report Wednesday stating police actions were justified in the fatal case of a jumper last February.
Hospital staff had reported a 27-year-old man missing Feb. 3, saying he might be a ‚Äúdanger to himself.‚ÄĚ
Halifax Regional Police found the door of the man’s South Park Street apartment barricaded.
‚ÄúThe police have a duty to protect life, and in the circumstances were justified in entering the apartment out of concern for the health and safety of the man,‚ÄĚ said SiRT director Ronald MacDonald.
Once inside, the man was found sitting on the outside edge of the balcony, said Wednesday’s SiRT report.
‚ÄúOther officers retreated, and one attempted to convince the man to come back inside,‚ÄĚ MacDonald said in a release. ‚ÄúHowever, the man eventually fell from the balcony.‚ÄĚ
He was rushed to hospital where he later died.
