BERWICK - Site preparation for the Harley Lawrence Memorial Garden in Berwick is now underway.

Site preparation for the Harley Lawrence Memorial Garden in Berwick has begun.

A landscaping team was working at Union and Commercial Streets on Wednesday preparing the southeast corner of the intersection for the garden, which will honour the memory of Lawrence, who called the streets of Berwick home in the months before his death in a bus shelter fire on Oct. 23.

Two arrests were recently made in connection with the 62 year-old’s death. Daniel Wayne Surette, 26, of Berwick and Kyle David James Fredericks, 25, of nearby Somerset, were charged with first-degree murder after a six-month long police investigation. The case is currently before the courts.

Formal construction of the garden is scheduled to begin June 10 with input and involvement from community members and students from Berwick and District School.

A media release issued by the Town of Berwick said the garden will “be  a place for contemplating life in a peaceful area.”
