TRUR0 – The time has come to take harsher measures for dealing with illegal dumping, a Colchester County councillor believes.

Strong measures needed to deal with illegal dumping, Colchester councillor says

“I would ask council to take a very strong stance on this,” Coun. Tom Taggart said, during this week’s council session.

“I really and truly believe that unless we take a very strong stand on this illegal dumping, it is going to get worse, and it is getting worse,” he said, suggesting measures that would see anyone found to have illegally disposed of their garbage answer for their actions in court.

“We need to make a statement on this.”

Council approved a motion introduced by Taggart to have staff explore its options for enforcing illegal dumping regulations.

Meanwhile, Coun. Ron Cavanaugh said stronger measures should also be taken when dealing with motoring litterbugs and he proposed a penalty normally associated with such practices as illegally hunting deer, which can result in vehicles being seized.

“I think it should be the same thing with throwing garbage out,” he said. “Your vehicle is confiscated. You are not going to stop this with a $200 fine.”

People should sort like they're supposed to!!...compost/recyclables/ garbage. I've never had my stuff rejected. It's only rejected if you aren't sorting properly. People are getting lazier all the time. The Municipality has made it so easy with all the literature on how to properly sort. There's even a number to call if you're not sure what goes where. People need to be accountable for this illegal dumping!

Unfortunate as it is. The town are the ones who have create this with their clear mandate and it's not just here. It's everywhere in north Erica that has switched to a clear bag system

Can anyone say POWER TRIP?? I have garbage at my place that the dump refuses to accept. So I should save it?? Here is a thought if the dump will not take it ban it's use at the business level. I don't blame people for dumping. I would be more than happy to give this garbage to any councilor. Considering what I pay for garbage removal I should not have to sit on it!
