‘Scrabble keeps the brain sharp’

BIBLE HILL – Norah Murdoch and Dorothy Bohez had two things in common when they sat across from each other for the first time on Monday – liking to meet new people and playing Scrabble.

The two women were opponents in the Local Seniors Games that kicked off on Monday and will run until Friday, with an additional day later in the month for a round of golf.

“I just wanted to participate,” said Bohez, a Millbrook resident. “I haven’t come to the games for a number of years and it’s a fun time. I wanted to come back.”

The two women spent two-and-a-half hours at the Scrabble table for the games, along with about 10 other seniors.

“I’ve been playing in these games for four years now,” said Truro’s Murdoch. “I like to meet new people, it’s fun and it’s a nice way to spend a morning – a rainy one at that. I enjoy it.”

While Murdoch has been playing the word-forming board game since she was a teenager, Bohez only started about 10 years ago after moving to the area from Calgary.

“My sisters play it, so they got me started,” she said.

Scrabble will be the only game Bohez will participate during the weeklong Local Seniors Games, but Murdoch has other plans.

“Scrabble keeps the brain sharp,” she said. “But I also enjoy and will play Skip-Bo (on Tuesday), cribbage, lawn bowling and regular bowling this year.”

Along with Scrabble, the opening day of the games also featured washer toss at the MacMillan Show Centre and casual walking at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.

Something new this year is pickleball, a sport that combines tennis and table tennis on a court with lightweight paddles and balls. It was first featured in last fall’s Nova Scotia 55 Plus Games held in the Truro area.
