Money to be shared between Truro, Amherst locations

TRURO – Family resource centres in Cumberland and Colchester Counties are getting a $75,000 increase to share on delivering programs to their communities.

Maggie's Place in Truro

The Nova Scotia government announced Wednesday its injecting $2 million more into the 26 family resource centres in the province and for Maggie’s Place, which has offices in Amherst and Truro, it means they will be able to do a lot more in delivering family resources and support.

“We’re ecstatic,” executive director Carolyn d’Entremont said following the announcement. “We will be able to provide more programming, more of what we do. For example, instead of doing a parenting program once a year it means we can now do it two of three times a year. Or if there’s a program we only offered in Amherst, it means we might be able to take it on the road to other communities in the county.”

Representatives with the provincial family resource centres met with Nova Scotia Community Services Minister Joanne Bernard a few months ago, d’Entremont said, and were informed increasing provincial funding to family resources was part of the Liberal platform, but at that time no amount was projected.

Wednesday’s announcement was welcome news, d’Entremont said.

“For us it’s a significant increase. We’re very pleased,” she said.

Both family resources centres fundraise during the year, d’Entremont said, and the funding will allow more attention to be paid to providing resources.

Family resource centres offer programming for parents, children, and families, such as pre and post-natal support, child development and parenting programs. Generally the centres offer services to families with children up to the age of six.

The money announced Wednesday will be spread equally among the 26 family resource centres, giving each a $75,000 annual increase. The remaining $50,000 will provide training and increase capacity.
