TRURO – A closer look at prostitution and torture related issues will be taken in Truro when film directors come to town to discuss the contentious topic.

Linda MacDonald, a counsellor and relationship educator with the Truro-based Persons Against Non State Torture, told the Truro Daily News a National Film Board screening of the documentary ‘Buying Sex’ will be shown at the Marigold Cultural Centre on April 26 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Directors Teresa MacInnes and Kent Nason, of the Halifax area, will bring forward the voices of sex workers who support law amendments, formerly prostituted women who want abolition, policy-makers, lawyers and male buyers.

MacDonald said a woman who was a prostitute will speak with the group and discussion will also revolve around two countries that have made groundbreaking law reforms.

“It’s about awareness … people don’t think women and children in homes deal with this but I’ve heard stories from Colchester (County) women about their stories,” said MacDonald.

The issue is relevant to this area, she said.

“It can happen to any citizen … we’ve talked to about 3,000 women around the world,” MacDonald said.

“Prostitutes have endured water torture, whipping, being put in cages, and gang rape is common,” she said.

MacDonald said bringing the screening event to Truro will hopefully make people more aware of the topic and encourage them to contact their member of parliament to speak out for legislation changes.

“I’d like to see johns and pimps criminalized and held accountable. I’d like to see prostitutes decriminalized and resources made available to help them.”

There is no charge to attend the event, but donations will be accepted. The screening is in conjunction with Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which is April. The film screening is supported by Persons Against Non State Torture, Central Nova Women's Resource Centre, Colchester Sexual Assault Centre and the Canadian Federation of United Women Truro.
