TRURO – For two weeks this month, customers to participating grocery stores will have a chance to donate to the Hospice Food from the Heart program.
The Colchester East Hants Hospice Society is partnering with select Sobeys and Foodland stores in Colchester County and East Hants for the program, which runs from April 16 to 30.
Serving an average of 10 families per month, Food from the Heart helps to relieve financial pressure experienced by families facing end of life.
Grocery customers can donate $2 to the program, which has proven to be crucial to the hospice society and its clients. Families in need of assistance, as identified by the Palliative Care Program, are provided grocery cards on a bi-weekly basis that can be used at Foodland or Sobeys.
The program is unique to Colchester East-Hants and 100 per cent of all funds raised go directly to families in the communities.
An increased awareness of the program among patients and palliative care nurses has resulted in more people accessing Food from the Heart. With this success has come a greater need for program funding.
