TRURO – A Truro councillor has asked staff to look into issues surrounding an accumulation of trash behind a Dominion Street property.

Discarded furniture and other debris that can be seen at the rear of 25 Dominion Street has raised the concerns of a Truro councillor who views the trash as an eyesore. Photo by Harry Sullivan TRURO DAILY NEWS

“That property could be on this (unsightly) list every month. And for some reason it’s very attractive for attracting garbage,” Coun. Tom Chisholm said during this week’s council session, regarding an apartment building at 25 Dominion St.

“It seems the number one place to put a mattress is in the back parking lot,” he added, before requesting if there was any long-term solution that can be found for resolving the issue.

A cursory survey at the rear of the property shows it to be littered with several pieces of discarded, water- soaked furniture and other debris that appears to have been present for some time.

Town planner Jason Fox told council the property has had ongoing issues with garbage but because two individuals jointly own the building, staff has had problems tracking them down to resolve the concerns.

“We are dealing with it, it’s all we can do,” he said.

The landlords of this property seem to have little respect for their own investment. Why do people not want to take care of their properties? I have never understood this. Sure, it probably was a tenant or two who left this mess, but ultimately, the landlord should be held accountable! We all should do our best to keep our properties nice and tidy to protect our investments for the future.

If the town had a special big garbage pick up say once a month instead of once a year like they do in Quebec they would not have this problem .

Well geeeez...if he's so concerened....why doesn't he get off his lazy ass and put it in the empty dumpster right there himself. Seriously. Has it come to this? A story based on 3 pieces of garbage that a PUBLIC SERVANT wants to make a national issue out of that he could have picked up and disposed of in 1 minute flat. Seriously?!!?

Why don't You go pick it up then, since you don't seem to think people cleaning up other peoples trash is a problem? the owners of this property obviously don't have respect for their own property, respect for those who have to witness this mess everyday.
