BIBLE HILL – An annual non-competitive run for children is returning to Bible Hill next month.
The eighth annual Hubtown Youth Fun Run will take place on May 10 with registration from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Agridome in Bible Hill, followed by the run at 11 a.m. on the raceway track.
The non-competitive run will be held rain or shine and is open to students in Grades primary to 9. Younger children traditionally run around the track once, while older children go a couple of times, but there is no specific distance required.
Raj Makkar, an event organizer, said the gathering promotes physical, social, mental and emotional health.
“Running, walking or jogging is the easiest thing you can do for your health … and people are more and more aware of the benefits of physical activities,” said Makkar. “There’s also sheer enjoyment in physical activities. It’s getting back to the basics and you don’t need technology to have fun.”
Makkar believes that message is loud and clear every year as the number of participants increases.
“It’s definitely gotten bigger. Last year, there were 650 people and the first year there were about 300.”
And schools are benefiting from the annual run as well.
“When it first started schools didn’t have many running clubs and now most of them do,” said Makkar, adding last year the run attracted about a dozen schools. A school spirit award, recognizing exceptional run participation, is also given out annually.
Registration for the fun run has begun. It only costs $2 to register and can be done at the event, by logging onto www.youthrun.chebucto.org or calling 893-1112 or 895-5353.
