BIBLE HILL – The Colchester RCMP is warning residents of a new mail scam that is circulating.

Over the past week, several people have reported having received letters and cheques from Reitman’s Canada. The recipients are asked to cash the cheque, in some cases just under $4,000, and participate in a mystery shoppers program.

They are asked to spend $100 at one of the local big box stores then complete a survey. They are then asked to send $3206.41 through Western Union to a third party and are again asked to complete a survey on the security measures used by Western Union.

The recipient is then told that the remaining funds are the reward for participating in the program.

Soon thereafter, the bank contacts the recipient stating that the cheque was fake and they are responsible for any money spent.

Legitimate businesses would not offer programs such as this. If you receive any cheques or letters in the mail similar to this, do not participate and contact you local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
