TRURO – One hundred women who care about the community are needed to come forward for a special event.

The 100 Women Who Care will take place June 3 at the Holiday Inn in Truro. The reception begins at 5 p.m., followed by the meeting at 6 p.m. It is one of four such events throughout the year.

The gathering brings 100 women together to learn more about non-profit organizations serving this community. Each woman will donate $100 and the $10,000 collected by the entire group will be given to a local non-profit organization. If $100 is too much for one person, a team of four people can enter.

“Staff and volunteers in non-profit organizations spend a great amount of time chasing dollars … you don’t get to live in a community and not give back,” said Cindie Smith, an event co-ordinator. “We really want to impress on young women to make giving a part of their life … and if you are already giving, don’t stop. We have no intention of taking away from others.”

Co-ordinator Sylvia Estee added, “It’s (a) quick, simple and fun” way to benefit others in the community.

The organization receiving the finances will be picked fairly, added Smith. Women who participate can nominate a non-profit group to be considered. Three groups will randomly be drawn and they will make a five-minute presentation at the 100 Women Who Care event.

“The women will vote on who gets the donations based on the presentations and the one with the most votes gets the $10,000,” explained Smith.

Smith said if 100 women do not come forward, the initiative cannot proceed. Registration is open and the deadline to register is May 6. Women can get involved by emailing 100womentruro@gmail.com or logging onto www.100womentruro.ca once the event website is launched on April 11.
