Canadian Press-Debate on third and final reading of essential services legislation aimed at ending a strike by nurses who staff Halifax area hospitals has come to an end at the Nova Scotia legislature.

Voting on Bill 37 was set to start at 7:09 a.m. Friday.

Opposition Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie said his party will vote against the legislation because it promotes labour strife and doesn't protect patients.

The NDP says it will also vote against legislation that targets health care workers and does nothing to address safe staffing levels in hospitals.

The nurses have been on the picket line since 7 a.m. Thursday.

NSGEU president Joan Jessome says nurses will return to work when Bill 37 passes.

But, Jessome also says her union will challenge the legislation in court.
