WESTCHESTER MOUNTAIN – A crash on Highway 104, east of Exit 8 in Cumberland County, has claimed the life of a young girl.
Cumberland County RCMP responded to a call at 6:15 p.m. on Monday involving a collision between a tractor-trailer and a van. Both vehicles were travelling eastbound. The van was towing a utility trailer.
“A sheet of ice over there,” Alain LeBlanc, RCMP media relations, said of road conditions at the time of the accident. “It’s pretty bad.”
One of the four occupants in the van, a six-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three other occupants in the van were taken to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre with undetermined injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured.
Eastbound traffic is being diverted onto Trunk 4 at Exit 7.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. A traffic analyst has been called to assist with the investigation.
EHS, Westchester Fire Department and the department of transportation were also called to the scene.
“The roads are extremely slippery and we’re asking people to avoid the area,” LeBlanc said.
