TRURO – Colchester County Council last week approved a contribution from the municipality of a $1,250 grant to the Truro Minor Hockey tournament held on the weekend.
The Midget A Provincials tourney was expected to draw more than 200 people from the Valley, the South Shore, Cape Breton and Halifax areas.
But approval for the grant for the five-team tourney was not unanimous, with Councillor Tom Taggart expressing some dissatisfaction with the request.
“I’m not going to support it because of the simple fact I think it has a negative effect on minor hockey in West Colchester,” he said, because of the loss of players in that area who come to Truro to play.
And Coun. Lloyd Gibbs also expressed concern about the fact the Town of Truro did not contribute to the event, given that its businesses stood to benefit most from the economic spinoff the tournament would create.
“I’m starting to get fed up with the Town of Truro downloading to the county on a lot of this stuff,” he said. “It’s time they stepped up to the plate on this stuff too.”
The three day event was expected to cost slightly more than $13,000 to host.
