TRURO – A week of events specifically for seniors will again be celebrated in Colchester County.
The local seniors games, designed for people 55 and older, will take place May 5 to 9, mostly in Truro and Bible Hill.
Valley’s Bob Webb, event registrar, told the Truro Daily News it’s the 24th year for the Colchester County-based games that encourages activity in adulthood.
“It’s to get (people) out, to have them socialize and if they start the games, they will carry them on. You don’t want to see a sedentary lifestyle,” said Webb.
Some of the events this year include cards (45s, bridge, Skip Bo), lawn bowling, washer toss, golfing and darts. New this year is pickle ball, which Webb describes as
“similar to badminton.” Also, a walking event at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre will include the opportunity for prizes based on the number of laps walked.
While the majority of activities will be held at the Bible Hill fire hall on Pictou Road, lawn bowling will take place at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. Golfing will be offered at the Mountain Golf Club in East Mountain and washer toss will be at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition grounds in Bible Hill.
Last year there were about 170 participants in the games and Webb hopes that number will increase this year.
All levels of skills are welcome and the week will wrap up with a social and silent auction that Friday night, beginning at 5 p.m. at the village hall in Bible Hill.
The cost is $5 per event or $10 for unlimited participation. Call 897-4679 to sign up or for more information.
