Credit Union Center wins the east with more than 1.4 million votes

KINGSTON - Kingston’s Credit Union Centre is $100,000 richer and could soon play host to an NHL hockey game.

Credit Union Centre president Wayne Fowler was at the Montreal Canadiens Alumni game in Berwick on March 22 to rally votes for Kingston in the Kraft Hockeyville contest.

After receiving 1,472,836 votes in the most recent round of online and telephone voting in the Kraft Hockeyville contest, Kingston has beaten out Central Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, in the eastern bracket of the competition. However, Central Bedeque wasn’t far behind with 1,403,259 votes.

Credit Union Centre president Wayne Fowler said in a telephone interview immediately following the announcement at 1 p.m. Atlantic time on March 23 that “we’re all pretty excited.”

“To get over 1.4 million votes is amazing,” he said. “We’ve got an uphill push going against Sylvan Lake.”

Sylvan Lake, Alberta, is the winner of the western bracket, bringing in 1,563,797 votes, compared to Salmon Arm BC’s 847,193. The announcements were made during the second intermission of the Calgary versus Edmonton game on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada.

Fowler said supporters had be pushing hard on social media such as Facebook over the next few hours to get as many votes as possible. He said the Kingston group would  be drawing on all their partnerships and networks.

He said the arena board has worked very hard to get to the point that its has enough funding to pay for the required upgrades and renovations. He said the $100,000 prize would “put us over the top.” Although their “ecstatic” with what they have now, Fowler said, “the gloves are off” in the battle to make Kingston Canada’s next Hockeyville.

Fowler offered his congratulations to Central Bedeque on "a very tight race" and said that he hopes the east coast can stick together in the final round.

Voting in the final round began at 1 a.m. Atlantic on March 23 and remains open until 12:59 Atlantic time on March 25. Fowler said there were already people around him in Kingston voting at 1 a.m.
