Credit Union Centre makes final four, now guaranteed $50,000
KINGSTON - Kingston’s Credit Union Centre is still in the running for the title of Kraft Hockeyville 2014.
Kingston was one of the final four communities, two in Eastern Canada and two in Western Canada, announced early Sunday morning as the contest moved into its next phase.
In addition to moving on to the next level, Kingston is now guaranteed $50,000, which the arena committee can put toward facility upgrades.
The next round of voting for Kraft Hockeyville began at 1 a.m. ADT Sunday and will continue for 48 hours, to narrow the field down to two, both of which will receive $100,000.
The other three remaining communities are Central Bedeque, PE; Sylvan Lake, AB; and Salmon Arm, BC.
‚ÄúWe‚Äôre pretty ecstatic right now,‚ÄĚ Credit Union Centre president Wayne Fowler said by phone shortly after the announcement of the final four.
‚ÄúIt‚Äôs great, and the nice thing is, there are two communities from Atlantic Canada, and we‚Äôre the only one from Nova Scotia.‚ÄĚ He added, ‚ÄúI feel we have a really good chance of (making the final two).‚ÄĚ
Fowler stressed, ‚Äúall we can do now is work for the next level.‚ÄĚ Since the final-16 were announced a week ago, ‚Äúit‚Äôs been out of our hands.‚ÄĚ
Asked what his group does from here, Fowler replied, ‚Äúwe‚Äôll be hitting social media pretty hard tonight. Tomorrow, we contact Leo (MLA Leo Glavine) and Greg (MP Greg Kerr), and get them to get their respective machineries going.‚ÄĚ
As the only Nova Scotia community remaining, ‚Äúwe‚Äôll need a province-wide blitz, to make sure as many people as possible vote.‚ÄĚ
Meanwhile, the response to Kingston‚Äôs bid continues to be impressive. ‚ÄúI‚Äôve probably received 500 comments tonight alone, just myself,‚ÄĚ Fowler said.
Speaking earlier in the evening, he pointed out, ‚Äúwe‚Äôre really happy to be where we are, and to have gotten as far as we have.‚ÄĚ
He felt that move on or not, ‚Äúwe have an extra $25,000 (now $50,000) we didn‚Äôt have a month ago, we‚Äôve gained that much again and more in terms of positive publicity, and the amount of community spirit we‚Äôve generated, there‚Äôs no way you can put a price on that.‚ÄĚ
He stressed, ‚ÄúIt‚Äôs pretty exciting for us, especially where there was talk two years ago that the Kingston arena wouldn‚Äôt even be here. Now, there aren‚Äôt too many people out there who don‚Äôt know we‚Äôre the Credit Union Centre.‚ÄĚ
