TRURO - Colchester County Council has voted against supporting a marketing levy for hotels and motels as proposed by the Central Nova Tourist Association (CNTA).

"I have a lot of concerns about this," Mayor Bob Taylor said, of the proposal to add a levy to accommodation sites with 10 or more units.

"This is a big concern of mine," especially given that the CNTA had requested that the municipality collect the money from hotel and motel operators and turn it over to the tourist association.

Several councillors said they had spoken to hotel owners who also expressed opposition to the marketing levy, which was to be used for promoting tourism activities and events.

Council said it preferred to wait for the completion of a provincial study that is also looking at the issue of introducing a marketing levy.
