TRURO – It’s a topic that many people aren’t aware of, and that’s why the local hospice society is bringing information to light on end-of-life aspects.

“Our Conversation Series is a new project we’re working on,” said Craig Johnson, communications representative with the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society. “We plan to expand the education and advocacy work so people know what to expect at the end of life.”

The three-part series will include evening educational sessions, focusing on end-of-life issues, drawing on expertise from community resource people with experience in a variety of fields.

The first session, to be held March 27, will focus on the legal aspects of end-of-life planning. A local lawyer will talk about the importance of making a will, as well as other decisions and legal documents associated with end-of-life planning.

“Lots of people think that they really should have a will, or should at least let somebody know what their wishes are,” said Linda Turner, a social worker with the hospice society that has been organizing the series. “We’re hoping that, through the opportunity to learn more, people will be motivated to attend to some of these things that are important should something happen. Things could be made a little easier if their wishes were made known.”

Johnson said the topic is one that has come up over the years, although not in a very talked about way.

“A lot of our workers or volunteers have heard about it and some of the educational challenges of end of life, especially from families after someone passes away,” he said.

“We want to inspire people to talk about it,” added Turner.

With legal matters being the topic of the first session, the second will take a focus on financial issues, while the third will touch on medical and health-related issues.

The first session begins at 6:30 p.m. on March 27 at the hospice society office, located at 89 Queen St. in Truro. It will run until about 8:30 p.m. and is free to the public.
