The North Shore Recreation Center upstairs kitchen is getting a new makeover. The kitchen will have a new fridge and a stainless steel sink. The project began in January.
"It was basically showing its wear and tear," said Lorenda Ebbett. "We just decided to do a re-design to bring it up-to-date. "
The project began in January and is expected to finish this month. The renovation is being funded by the community and the Municipality of the County of Colchester.
Ebbett and NSRC members decided two years ago to make the upstairs recreational area more wheelchair accessible, which influenced the kitchen renovation.
"We installed a lift to make the meeting room more wheelchair accessible," said Ebbett. "Upon installing the lift we decided to renovate our washrooms to make sure we have barrier-free washrooms. In order to do that we had to remove the wall joining the kitchen."
The new kitchen will include new flooring, a fridge and stainless steel sink. Future plans include buying a new microwave and new wiring.
Ebbett hopes the new kitchen will spark more community gatherings and enthusiasm.
"I think it's a really nice space for people to use for family functions," she said.
"It's available for rent. And I think it will be a little more user friendly for weddings and family functions."
The makeover will bring new life to the recreation center and hopefully bring new programs into the center, said Ebbett.
"There is interest in the community such as cooking classes. That's probably something we will see in the future- classes like that being offered."
