Pat Works, left, and Cathy Anderson are getting ready for Friday's seventh annual Lenten chowder luncheon in Truro to celebrate the Lent season at the Immaculate Conception Parish Church. All money raised goes back to the church.
Cathy Anderson, a member of the church for more than 30 years, said it's the perfect way to kick off the season of Lent.
"A lot of ecumenical brothers come in and join us along with people from other churches," she said.
The church will host meals every Friday beginning tomorrow until April 11 to celebrate the season.
Yvonne Dempsey, one of the head cooks for the dinners, said it's just great to see everyone out.
"It's a social gathering, plus people like coming in for the homemade rolls," said Dempsey with a laugh. "Everything is homemade."
"We socialize a lot," Anderson added.
The meal includes homemade fish chowder for $8 and rolls and dessert.
Corn chowder is also available for $7 for people who aren't fans of seafood cuisine. Punch cards with six-week blocks will also be available at a cost of $40.
Takeout can also be arranged.
"We have takeout for people who like to pick up their meal and they might not have time to stay and eat," said Dempsey.
Last year, more than 1,000 people were served and 150 pounds of haddock was fished from the sea and prepared in the church's five-gallon pots.
More families are coming in each year to experience the annual meal to get the point across that everyone is welcome.
"More people are coming in every year. Families will come in with their children. We like to see our numbers grow. Everybody is welcome," said Dempsey.
All money raised will go back into the church for renovation projects.
"It goes back in for updating and we put a lot of money into the kitchen. We have new tables, which now need table clothes," laughed Anderson.
The storm date for Friday's luncheon is March 9.
