LOWER FIVE ISLANDS - Area residents who are served by the postal outlet in Lower Five Islands may soon see a reduction in hours.
"It's under consideration right now," Canada Post spokesman John Caines said from Ottawa, of the possibility of closing the community's post office on Saturdays.
"We're looking at it for sure. We're looking at our whole network," he said. "This is something we have to do if we are going to be viable going forward."
Colchester County Coun. Tom Taggart, who said he had received a letter from Canada Post about the potential change, raised the issue at last week's council meeting, describing it as "one more case" of small, rural communities losing their identities.
"I am absolutely, totally disappointed with everything that goes on at Canada Post," he said.
Caines, however, said the Crown Corporation is focusing on traffic patterns in all its locations and at that outlet, "we know that there's very little traffic on Saturdays in that post office."
He said Canada Post will be meeting with union members later this month to discuss its plans.
"It's all based on the traffic patterns that we see when people are using the post office," he said.
