TRURO – More than 250 swimmers are expected to participate in the largest provincial swim meet ever hosted at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre (RECC).

Miranda Bates, event organizer and head coach of the Truro Centurions swim team, said hosting the Nova Scotia junior championships this year lays the groundwork for many more of this kind of event in the future.

“It’s probably the biggest meet we’ve held in Truro in 10 years,” said Bates.

There are 11 Nova Scotia teams and one from P.E.I. participating in the three-day competition. The local club has 32 swimmers, age nine to 25, entered in the event.

Prior to the first heats Friday afternoon, the 256 participants spent about an hour warming up in the pool’s eight lanes.

“We are looking to bring home some medals,” said the head coach. She added they are also setting their sights on a banner.

“We’ll be competing for the banner against Halifax, Dartmouth, Sackville,” she said. “The challenge for us is to see where we stand against the bigger clubs from the city.”

She said the Centurions club has about 69 members, while the club from metro has about 300 members, 43 of which were scheduled to participate in the Truro meet.

“It’s going to be interesting,” said Bates.

Aquatics manager Suzanne Hicks-McCully said hosting an event of this calibre in Truro is a great opportunity for the town, the county and the surrounding communities.

“I’m excited that it is here,” said the manager. “I spent 15 years working at Truro Centennial (pool) and we were never able to host a meet at this level.

“It’s quite exciting to be in the mix and host these events along with other big facilities.”

The RECC pool has eight lanes, two more than many other venues, a state-of-the-art timing system, seating area for spectators and a larger deck space designed for competitions.

The championship meet continues Saturday and Sunday at the RECC.
