Melody to celebrate event’s 10th anniversary

TRURO – It’s simple, really.
That’s the message that Ross Thompson has incorporated into a song he was commissioned to write for this Saturday’s Choirs for Comfort event.

“The theme to Choirs for Comfort has always been the same, that humans are to have the fundamental needs to survive,” said Thompson, about Safe and Warm, the song that will be sung en masse at the end of the 10th anniversary event.

Choirs for Comfort started a decade ago to assist the victims of a deadly tsunami in Indonesia. Throughout the years, the program has helped both international and local causes.

“Safe and Warm is about the primary need of things of life – food, clothes, a home – that people need to manage. It’s a simple idea, really,” Thompson said.

Thompson and Lynn Macpherson started Choirs for Comfort together and Thompson said it was Macpherson’s idea to do something special for the anniversary occasion.

“She approached me to write the song,” he said. “It was very satisfying to write.”

The event, which begins at 3 p.m. Saturday at the First United Church in Truro, will feature 10 choirs. All will perform Safe and Warm at the end of the show.

“It has been well-received,” Thompson said about all 10 choirs having had a chance to rehearse the song. “If you’re able to write a song where performers, especially children, are able to take on the music, feel at home performing it and express your sentiment in a way you were hoping, that’s your hook.”

While he hasn’t heard all choirs rehearse the song yet, Thompson is looking forward to that moment.

“I’m very excited to hear it,” he said.

“I have a half-hour rehearsal with all the choirs to put it together and it will be interesting to see if all the technical challenges will be met. All the individual choir directors have been doing a great job so far.”

Admission to Choirs by Comfort is by donation and in support of the Colchester-East Hants Hospice Society.
