MIDDLETON – A 69-year-old man died after being trapped between the bucket arm and body of an backhoe on Wednesday.

Colchester RCMP news

At approximately 12:58 p.m., the Colchester District RCMP, Tatamagouche Fire Department and Emergency Health Services (EHS) responded to the call on private property on the Upper River John Road in Middleton, near Tatamagouche, and found the man, who hasn't been identified pending notification of next of kin, deceased.

The matter is being turned over to the Medical Examiner's office.

Mark Langille, deputy chief with the fire department, said about 15 of the department's members responded.

"We were called in to assist EHS to extricate the man from the machine," said Langille, adding the members didn't use hydraulics but instead used another backhoe that was in the area.

Langille also said the department will keep a close eye on the members that responded for about 24 hours.

"If we see there is a need for additional counselling, we will bring somebody in," he said.
