Theresa Lively performs at the Debert Kitchen Party. Musicians are welcome to show up and join in the fun Saturday afternoons.
Kitchen parties have been held at the Masonic Lodge on Saturday afternoons since 2007 and many times every seat in the building is filled.
“Brentwood had something similar a few years ago but they lost their building so we asked if they’d mind us holding something on Saturday afternoons,” explained Norman Strong, a member of the Debert Masonic Lodge. “We just wanted to get something going so people could come out and enjoy themselves.
“We get 15 to 25 musicians each week. People can just show up and give us their name as they come in if they want to perform. They perform in the order they’re listed. If musicians want to sit in the crowd and play along they can do that. It’s very relaxed.”
Strong said he plays a little but doesn’t consider himself to be a musician.
Donations are accepted but if people don’t have money for a donation that isn’t a problem. A 50/50 draw is also held during the afternoon, and that and the donations bring in enough money to cover the heating costs for the event.
Although most of the people who drop in live around the Debert area visitors have come from as far as Pictou.
“We have a lot of regulars and we get new people here quite often,” added Strong. “Everyone’s welcome and we hope they all have a good time. It’s a real Newfoundland kitchen party.”
The kitchen parties are held from 1 to 5 pm at the Masonic Lodge Hall, located at 1191 Plains Road.
