TRURO - Victorian Order of Nurses home support workers in Colchester and East Hants are willing to walk off the job next month to back up their bargaining demands.
The VON workers represented by the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union Local 35, which consists of about 300 members, recently voted 98 per cent in favour of striking as negotiations approach on Feb. 10.
VON workers are looking for wage parity. VON home support workers care for clients in their own residences, allowing seniors and others in need of care the opportunities to stay at home to receive care rather than entering hospitals or care facilities.
However, they are paid less than those who perform the same tasks in hospitals and long-term care establishments.
Members of Local 40 in Tri-County/Shelburne County, Local 30 in Digby/Clare, Local 85 in Pictou County and Local 32 in Yarmouth/Argyle voted 92 per cent, 100 per cent, 99 per cent and 94 per cent respectively earlier this month in favour of striking.
