Ratification voting set for Sunday

TRURO - The union representing school bus drivers intends to begin strike action on Monday.

CUPE sets strike date for Monday

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) is confirming CUPE Local 3890 expects to take action at the beginning of the week.

The update was confirmed by Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) in a news release Friday afternoon. Should the strike go ahead, the release says, it will coincide with the start of exams for high school students. Exams will go ahead as planned.

CUPE will hold a ratification vote for members on Sunday on the board's final offer that was presented last Friday. The move affects approximately 400 bus drivers, custodians and school board trades workers.

A ratification vote, as opposed to a strike vote, means union members have to physically show up for their vote to be counted. CUPE requires a 51 percent majority of votes from members at the meetings.

As more information is received, CCRSB will update students, parents and guardians via www.ccrsb.ca, Twitter (@ChignectoCRSB) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/ChignectoCRSB).

Don't give them what they want. They are wasting tax payers money and jeopardizing our children's education. CUPE 3890 wants CCRSB to create "make work" projects to prevent laying off workers. I have worked in the construction industry for close to 20 years and being laid off when there isn't enough work is part of it. My comment to CUPE workers is to suck it up and join the real world.
