TRURO – Sherry Morrison was horrified to see a daycare centre in Truro where she launched a career working with children gutted by fire last weekend.

The Truro resident and mother of two young boys has fond memories of time she spent working at Mount Pleasant Nursery School under the caring tutelage of owner Pat Roberts.

“I worked there when I graduated in 1986 for about five-and-half, six years,” said Morrison. “When I heard about the fire on the news I was devastated.”

The centre, located on Harris Avenue, has operated since 1977. The fire displaced about 55 children, 11 staff and ravaged the contents of the building including toys, books, office equipment, appliances and other furniture.

Immediately the former employee of the school and longtime friend of Roberts wanted to help and soon recruited others to join the cause.

“My seven-year-old son said, ‘mom, that’s your friend. You’ve got to help her.”’

Morrison has organized an outreach event encouraging people to drop off gently used, good quality items from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 1 at Room 122, Forrester Hall, Nova Scotia Community College Truro campus.

Morrison’s sons Todd, 7, and Lee, 9, eagerly cleaned out their own toy boxes and bookshelves to make the first donations.

"I want to help because I like to work with little kids (and) I feel bad for the workers and all the kids," said Lee. He also wanted the children to have some of their toys because "I want them to play and learn."

Morrison contacted a number of other daycare centres in the area asking if they would be willing to donate any surplus inventory and said the response has been encouraging.

“We just want Pat to get the daycare back up and running,” she said.

Some of the items needed are books, puzzles, games, dolls, trucks, puppet, dress up clothes, office supplies, shelves, art and crafts supplies, blankets, cribs and crib sheets.

Monetary donations to assist with re-building efforts are also welcome.

Lee and Todd, you are just awesome! I may have to hug you when I get back to work Wednesday or Thursday. Mount Pleasant is my little girl's daycare, but it is more like her second home and her teachers are just wonderful! Thank you for all that you are doing to help Pat and Vince get our new daycare ready for our kids. Bravo!
