Elderly couple out walking black lab

PICTOU – The Town of Pictou Fire Department rescued a dog that fell through the ice at the Pictou Yacht Club on Sunday.

According to fire chief Paul Janes, an elderly couple was out walking their black Lab Sunday afternoon when the dog began to walk on the ice near the yacht club.

“There’s a bubble system to prevent the ice from forming and damaging the floating docks,” said Janes. “The dog got to the area next to the dock and fell through.”

The owners immediately called 911 for assistance.

The Pictou Fire Department responded and arrived on scene a few minutes later. When Janes arrived on scene, he and two other donned their rescue suits.

“The dog was about 30 feet off shore and we were able to get him on thicker ice and back to shore,” said Janes. “It was 17 minutes from the 911 call to when the dog was safe.”

By 3:02 p.m. the rescue team had all their gear off and headed back to the station.

The dog was immediately put in the owners’ car to warm up.

“Don’t let dogs or pets out on the ice,” said Janes. “It’s been below freezing for quite a few days, but that doesn’t mean the ice is safe, even for pets.”
