‘It’s about helping others as simple as that’

BIBLE HILL – Not all Christmas gifts can be wrapped in boxes, as about 10 local families discovered this holiday.

Christmas tree grower Darrell Sandeson was able to offer a special gift to several families this year providing them with a tree donated by Bible Hill resident Katrina Lemon and her husband Curtis.

An “outside the box” donation by a Bible Hill couple aiming to help people in need provided a special, unexpected Christmas gift for several families in the area.

Katrina said she and her husband are longtime customers of Greenfield Christmas tree grower Darrell Sandeson, stopping by his lot in Bible Hill each year to chose a special tree. While thinking about ways to be charitable and help others less fortunate during the holidays, this year they decided to purchase 10 trees, which were presented to people by Sandeson as he determined a need for assistance.

“You can do your same old, same old thing and I wanted to do something totally different,” she said. “Everybody needs a tree. The tree won’t last forever but hopefully the memories will last.”

She added that she wanted the gift to be “unexpected to the person receiving it.”

“It’s about helping others as simple as that.”

Sandeson has been selling trees at the corner of College Road and Main Street since 1999 and this is the first time he’s ever had someone pre-pay for Christmas trees that he could donate to families in need.

“We’ve always tried to help people, but this, this just blew me away,” said Sandeson.

He patted his chest and said “It hit me here.”

The Christmas tree grower said he could often tell by the way people ask about the trees that they “are hurting” sometimes requesting ones at a lower cost.

This year he was thrilled to play Santa thanks to the generous donation making sure people in need had an important part of the holiday tradition to take home.

“It feels really, really good to be able to do it," he said. "We try to help people every year as much as we can but this year was really special."
