TRURO – It came and went, just like the forecast predicted – snow, freezing rain and rain fell on Colchester County on Sunday.

In Truro, roads were snow-covered and at times slippery, but some people took to the streets.

“My fiancé wanted to try out his new snowtires,” said Kara Healey, while visiting the Chisholm and Son Christmas tree lot at Sobeys on Prince Street around the lunch hour with her five-year-old daughter, Miyah Heighton.

The Kemptown resident said her fiancé had put new tires on his truck six weeks prior, however hadn’t had a chance to test them out before going away. He had just returned home in time for the snowstorm, and in time to pick out the family’s Christmas tree.

“Which one do you like, Miyah,” Healey asked while walking around the lot that saw about 15 trees sell before lunch. “She’s very indecisive.”

Miyah walked around much of the lot before deciding on a tree, while members of the Chisholm family continuously shoveled snow out of the paths.

Employees with the Town of Truro were out in the morning putting brine on the roads, and Const. Andrew Frost with the Truro Police Service didn’t have many motor vehicle collisions to report.

Colchester RCMP had received reports of a vehicle traveling throughout the Town of Stewiacke, pulling a child on a GT racer behind it.

“Officers located and charged a 20-year-old man from Stewiacke with careless and imprudent operation of a motor vehicle,” said RCMP St. Sgt. Gavin Nash, who was looking after media for the provincial RCMP on Sunday.

“Our main concern is that the person being towed behind the vehicle can die.”

Nash said two reports came in on Sunday – one at 11:54 a.m. and another at 12:33 p.m. – about a vehicle pulling a child. He couldn’t confirm it was the same person, however said it most likely was.

“We don’t get calls like this very often and it is certainly something we wouldn’t encourage.”

Nash said there weren’t any major motor vehicle accidents in the county, or even the province, however there were some concerns.

“There were lots of vehicles sliding off the road, and people stopping in the middle of the highway to clean off their wipers,” he said.

Along with numerous church service cancellations, the Splash and Dash was cancelled at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre, and harness racing at the Truro Raceway was called off.
