Despite the low temperatures Ski Wentworth was a busy spot on Saturday when it opened for the season.

Connor Jamieson and Kelsey Tattrie were excited to get back on the hills at Ski Wentworth again. They both plan to be regulars at the facility during the season.

“I’m usually here on opening day and I’ll be a regular here for the season,” said Connor Jamieson, of Pugwash. “I’ll be here until it closes today.”

Jamieson has been skiing since he was five years old and started snowboarding last year.

“Snowboarding is my favourite now,” he added. “It gives you and edge.”

Kelsey Tattrie, of Brule, also started with skiing and then took up snowboarding. She was at the hill as a visitor on Saturday but she also works at Ski Wentworth.

“A lot of people who ski go on to snowboarding because they want to try something new,” she said. “I teach snowboarding and it’s great. I get paid for something I love. I really like the adrenaline rush.”

Chloe Ripley, who is from Amherst and now lives in Debert, also plans to be out on her snowboard a lot this winter.

“I’ve been coming here for about five years and I was pretty excited about opening day,” she said. “I look forward to it every year.

“It’s pretty cold today but we’re still enjoying ourselves. “I used to ski but I needed a new challenge and now I prefer snowboarding.”

Ski Wentworth general manager Leslie Wilson was pleased with the turnout.

“It’s a great opening day,” she said. “Opening day is always exciting because there’s a lot of pent up energy. This is one of our earliest opening days ever. It’s been so cold we’ve been able to make a lot of snow and more trails will be open soon.”

She said the equipment now available, which was a legacy of the Canada Games, has been very beneficial when it comes to getting things ready early.

Ski Wentworth is open 9:30am to 4:30pm until Boxing Day, and on that date night-time hours will also be added. The facility is closed on Christmas day.
