TRURO - Tara MacPherson received the birthday present of a lifetime Friday when she and a group of co-workers were presented with a $1-million cheque.

Team members from the health services department at Parkland Truro (retirement living) happily accepted a $1-million cheque from an Atlantic Lotto representative on Friday. The group won the money in the Lotto Max draw from last Friday night. First row, from left, Lucy O’Donnell, Connie Boutilier, Tara MacPherson, Wanda Kent, Charlene MacKenzie and Bonita Mills. Second row, Jean Purdy, Frank Melanson, Tanya Johnson, Reta Pynn, Shelley Brown, Wendy Lewis, Robin Legge, Twilla Barkhouse and Kathleen Logan. Missing from photo is Sherry MacAulay.

MacPherson is one in a group of 16 people from Parkland Truro who have taken part in a lotto pool over the past three months.

The winning numbers were drawn in the Lotto Max draw last Friday night. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation labelled the group The ‘Sweet 16' Nursing Care Crew.

"We have five children, so it will be a nice Christmas this year," said Robin Legge, one of the winners.

An ALC team arrived at Parkland Truro to present the entire health services department with the cheque and a celebration on site instead of having all the winners travel to Moncton to claim their prize.

Edinburgh Hall in the gallery downstairs was well attended by residents of the retirement center, staff and family, along with media.

The winning Instapick ticket was purchased by Wanda Kent last Friday night at Le-A-Pol Store in Lower Truro, owned by Dale and Shelley Whidden, who will receive $10,000 for selling the ticket.

Winners will divide the winnings and each receive $62,500.

Winner Jean Purdy plans on visiting her son, whom she hasn't seen in seven years, on Vancouver Island, while Connie Boutilier's goal is to put her son through university.

While some of the winners are planning to pay off debts and finish renovations, or taking one or two extra trips, the common feeling through Parkland Truro was they will be able to have a nice Christmas and do a few things they wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

That's really great for these folks. Happy Christmas to them all. Don't know how they picked their lucky numbers, but if it was off of villalibra.com I would be very pleased for them. Good luck for the future to all of them
